The environmental and fire-safety benefits of clearing out the tons of refuse, abandoned vehicles and overgrown brush at Ukumehame, along a stretch of Honoapiilani Highway in West Maui, are clear. However, what improvement the action made in ensuring that homeless have a safe place to sleep that’s not along a county roadside is questionable.
