On Tuesday, the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization pulled a report claiming Hawaii’s solar-energy expansion capability easily outweighs the cost and capability of adding liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants as a “bridge” to reach carbon- zero energy production. UHERO’s admission that the report contains serious errors, and statements from the organization pledging more transparency over research authors’ alliances and sources of support, add up to a deeply unsatisfying development — as Hawaii residents depend on UHERO as a source of seemingly objective research that can be used to guide decision-making in their best interests.
