People often resist change, unless catalyzed by a powerful force, and Hawaii provides far too many examples. Bone-dry former plantation lands have long been visible for all to see — but fire prevention and safety plans weren’t addressed until Lahaina burned. Hawaii’s beaches are disappearing, and rare, beautiful and irreplaceable corals, marine species and native plants and animals are dwindling. But protective action has been inadequate, and too often triggered by court order.
