Honolulu’s City Council election quagmire will soon be resolved — hopefully. On Tuesday, the Hawaii Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a consolidated case that brings together two legal challenges regarding the eligibility of Chair Tommy Waters, who tried running again for the District 4 seat after serving four months shy of two consecutive terms. There is much to untangle, but one thing has been made clear from this kerfuffle: Hawaii’s voting process and the system’s methods of handling objections must be reviewed and updated.
