The Maui County Council’s Housing and Land Use Committee surely caught some observers by surprise last week by voting to move its long-debated, “get transient rentals out of residential neighborhoods” bill on toward a final vote. After all, the county has appeased commercial transient vacation rental (TVR) operators since at least 1989, and many believed or hoped Maui would never act. Fortunately, it did — for the good of its long-term residents.
