Gabbard’s complaint asks the federal election commission to investigate whether all of Hannemann’s travel and polling expenses have been properly reported, and alleging that part of his Hawaii lodging and tourism association salary should be listed as a campaign contribution due to work time she says he’s spending campaigning.
Gabbard, a candidate for the U.S. Congress states, "We need to ask ourselves this question if Mufi believes he and his powerful allies are above the laws that the rest of us have to follow is he fit to serve us in Congress."
A spokesperson for Hannemann’s campaign said "We are confident that the FEC will find these allegations to be frivolous and false."
The F.E.C. has five days to officially notify the Hannemann campaign of the complaint, and the campaign has 15 days to respond.
The commission can decide to dismiss the matter, to open an investigation, or to enter directly into what they call "conciliation discussions."
