Kokua Line: What if I don’t want 9/11 license plate?

Question: I recently purchased a new car and was issued my license plate in less than a month. Well, the city is issuing the 9/11 specialty plate, stating they are waiving all yearly specialty plate fees. I don’t want this license plate! Mind you, I have nothing against memorializing the 9/11 tragedy. In fact, I was in Manhattan, N.Y., a month before this tragedy and it hits home for me and I don’t want to be reminded of this horrific event! I just want the basic Hawaii license plate. … I called the city’s Department of Customer Services and the rep tried relentlessly to convince me that they are “doing me a favor by issuing the speciality plate for free.” I am aware of the ‘okina issue with the last order of license plates, but someone’s head should be rolling to allow the current fiasco to occur! And to shove the 9/11 plates down our throats is totally unacceptable! It’s become more than just the plate, it’s the city’s arrogant attitude to deal with the situation. … The rep told me I would need to go to each satellite city hall to learn if they have any “regular plates” in stock! … I visited two satellite locations and was very fortunate that the Ala Moana rep went out of her way to check the inventory at all satellite city hall locations. None were available and they didn’t know when the regular plates will become available. Please help me to look into this situation and find out when the regular plates will become available to residents. This is an unacceptable situation.
