Kokua Line: Why does teachers’ funding site have deadlines?

Question: There’s a website where teachers post classroom projects for people to donate money to, which is great, but they only get it if they reach their goal of 100% by a certain date. Why do it that way? Something is better than nothing! What happens to the donations when a goal isn’t reached?
