Letter: 2026 is already looking bleak just two weeks in

Here in Hawaii, 2026 began on a hopeful note — no fireworks deaths and fewer injuries. Hooray! But almost immediately the mood turned somber as our federal government invaded Venezuela, ostensibly to remove a narco trafficker, but more likely to take control of its vast oil reserves. We’ve had a constant stream of threats toward other countries, most concerning is longtime ally and friend Denmark over ownership of Greenland. What is going on? I thought we weren’t going to be the world’s policeman anymore.
