Letter: Expressions of faith are not the same as coercion

In response to a letter about religion and sports, University of Hawaii coach Timmy Chang’s brief expression of personal faith does not establish religion, nor does it speak for the university (“Coaches should keep religious beliefs private,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 6). The Constitution prohibits government coercion of religion — not the free speech of individuals who happen to be public employees. Courts have consistently recognized that personal religious expression, especially in voluntary, post-game interviews, is protected speech.
