Letter: Founders wanted to keep government religion-free

Our founders were well aware of the religious persecution that existed in the countries that they, or other colonists, emigrated from (“Separation of church and state misconstrued,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Sept. 18). They did their best to avoid this unpalatable experience in this new country. They did not want Americans to be persecuted for their religious or nonreligious beliefs.
