Letter: Get facts straight on Hawaii’s longline fishery

Rick Gaffney’s column paints a misleading picture of Hawaii’s longline fishery (“Don’t open marine sanctuary to fishing,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Sept. 20). The claim that longliners routinely hit their bigeye tuna quota is simply wrong. The fleet caught 81% of its 6,554-metric-ton bigeye tuna limit in 2024 and 73% in 2025. It is projected to reach 80% of its quota in 2026.
