I read with great amusement and some dismay a recent letter to the editor arguing that Hawaii needs to leave the union (“With U.S. unrest, time for isles to break free,” Star-Advertiser, Sept. 20). The writer’s justification was the often-claimed “illegal” overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom. It is a claim recently becoming more prevalent among Native Hawaiian advocacy groups.
