Letter: HMSA fee-for-service forcing docs to adapt

The practice of medicine is a privilege, but also a business. HMSA’s shift from capitation — fixed payment per enrolled patient — back to fee-for-service will force physicians to adjust how they manage reimbursements. Physician income must be adequate to support independent practice and the high cost of living in Hawaii; otherwise, access will remain strained.
