Letter: Is search for oil and gas causing earthquakes?

Are our oil extraction practices inviting earthquakes? To produce oil and gas from shale formations, it is common practice to perform hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Fracking can cause small earthquakes, but it has also been linked to larger earthquakes. The largest earthquake thought to be induced by hydraulic fracturing in the United States was an approximately magnitude-4 earthquake in Texas.
