Letter: Kalaheo Hillside perfect for recreational activities

I was not surprised that the Kalaheo Hillside property earmarked for development by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands was found to be unsuitable for housing due to the notoriously unstable soil conditions (“DHHL turns down city gift of Kailua land,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 1). The article suggested dismay by the city about being stuck with responsibility for the property. But it’s very obvious that the parcel is ideally suited to meet an alternative community need: outdoor recreation.
