A recent letter on rental car taxes uses math that is fundamentally flawed (“Close rental car tax loophole, reap reward,” Star-Advertiser, Feb. 24). While an individual pays a one-time $2,250 general excise tax to buy a $50,000 car, a car rental company pays a 0.5% wholesale tax and then generates $9.75 in state revenue every day it is rented. Over a typical two-year cycle, each car rental provides $5,300 in tax revenue to Hawaii.
