Letter: State DOE must step up, allow students to fail

While state Department of Education Superintendent Keith Hayashi did a superb job while at Waipahu High School, he has not got an inkling of what’s wrong with Hawaii’s public schools. A requirement to have all graduates versed in financial literacy is so far removed from the real world, especially when some graduates have learned helplessness, are barely literate and are not prepared for the working world.
