The 14th Amendment of the Constitution established penalties for states denying the right to vote to male citizens age 21 and older. The 15th Amendment prohibited denying the vote on the basis of race. The 19th Amendment prohibited denying it on the basis of sex. The 24th Amendment barred poll taxes in federal elections. The 26th Amendment protected the vote for citizens 18 and older.
