Maui condo fire forces residents to evacuate

Maui firefighters responded to a fire at a Kihei condo Thursday night.

The fire broke out at about 9 p.m. at the Hale Kamaole Condominiums.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a third-story unit fully engulfed.

The flames were 50 percent contained by 10 p.m. and extinguished just after 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Officials say no one was in the unit at the time of the fire.

Forty nearby units were forced to evacuate. Residents were allowed to return to their units at about 2:45 a.m.

The involved unit, along with eight surround units, were not allowed to be reoccupied. Those displaced residents were housed in other units within the complex.

Investigators say the involved unit was destroyed. They say the fire extended to the unit on the makai side. That unit sustained damage to its roof and storage closet on the balcony.

Other units surrounding the burned unit sustained smoke and water damage.

Although the investigation is not complete, officials say the fire does not appear to be intentionally set.

No injuries were reported.
