Off the news: Be cautious as whooping cough cases rise

The case count for pertussis, or whooping cough, is on the rise nationally, with rates returning to prepandemic levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Actually, for a number of reasons, including changes in vaccine types, numbers have trended up since the 1990s; they likely dropped briefly because of the sanitation and distancing of the COVID-19 era.
