Off the news: Community balks at Haleiwa development

A proposal for apartments and commercial development on open land abutting Haleiwa town’s Kahuku side has riled up North Shore no-growth advocates, who claim housing will overwhelm roads and take away “prime growing land.” Hundreds spoke or submitted testimony last week opposing City Council action to change the long-fallow plantation remnant’s state land-use designation from ag to “urban” — a city decision because the parcel is so small at 7.5 acres.
