It’s official: Hawaii’s recycling program is “inefficient and inconvenient,” the Star-Advertiser reports, as evidenced by the swelling fund of money collected for “HI-5” deposits. At 5 cents per plastic, glass or aluminum container with the HI-5 label, the fund has ballooned to $105 million, up from $74 million late last year. Those deposits are intended to be paid back to customers who bring containers to a recycling center — but the state Department of Health says there aren’t enough redemption centers, because there’s no place to put them.
