About 364 acres of rugged Puna coastal property, called Honolulu Landing, is being preserved in perpetuity by Hawaii County, thanks to a $3.7 million deal funded by the Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation Commission. The agency, which receives 2% of annual property tax revenue, was created to identify lands for purchase based on cultural, recreational and ecological value.
