Off the news: Once-endangered bird is rare success story

Survival of the ae‘o or Hawaiian stilt was in doubt before the marsh-dwelling birds were declared “endangered” in 1970. By the 1940s, only about 200 birds remained, as military development and urbanization on Oahu obliterated former wetlands. Only after habitat was set aside where birds were protected from rats, mongoose and feral cats — which pose ongoing threats — did populations increase.
