Maui’s King Kamehameha III Elementary School first opened on Front Street in Lahaina in 1913, and deciding where to rebuild after the school burned in August 2023 was difficult for all concerned. However, the original site is known to hold iwi kupuna, ancestral bones, which are best left undisturbed; the site also is in a tsunami flood zone, posing a safety risk.
