School threat suspect posed as student on day of arrest

A former Kamehameha Schools Big Island student accused of threatening to harm security guards at the Keaau campus was arrested for trespassing Monday.

Hawaii County police say 18-year-old Jeremy Costa went to the campus to speak to the principal, but was seen leaving in an erratic manner.

Capt. Randall Medeiros says he returned later that afternoon and was stopped by security who called police.

"At that time he was arrested by Puna patrol officers for criminal trespass and for promoting a detrimental drug stemming from a small amount of marijuana that was found in his vehicle at the school," he says.

Police say on Monday night they learned Costa had posted several threatening statements on his Facebook page including "rent a cops must die" and a reference to the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech.

On Tuesday morning police saw Costa hitchiking, heading in the direction of the school.

"He was wearing a Kamehameha School uniform shirt and was carrying several books when the officers approached him he tore off the shirt challenged the officers to a fight,"Medeiros says.

He was taken into custody for terroristic threatening and disorderly conduct and appeared in court Wednesday.

His bail is set at $100,000.

The school says Costa was released in August for unspecified reasons.

The school says appropriate precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of everyone on campus.
