Six people were rescued Saturday morning after their canoe capsized.
According to the Coast Guard, the canoe flipped about three miles off the coast of Barbers Point. The six canoeists managed to stay together by hanging to the canoe and alerted authorities via cell phone.
In a joint effort by the Honolulu Fire Department and the Coast Guard, all six people were rescued safely and brought back to Koolina Marina.
The Coast Guard recommends mariners purchase and maintain a VHF radio. Mobile phones are not a reliable tool for reporting a maritime accident, even if you are close to shore.
The Coast Guard highly recommends mariners wear lifejackets at all times while aboard any type of watercraft.
