State drug forestic lab gains interational accreditation

The state’s drug forensic lab is now one of the premier facilities in the world.

It was built from a converted garage.

Work took two years beginning in 2007.

On Tuesday, the lab was recognized with international accreditation.

It met a world-recognized set of standards of operation for forensic laboratories.

"This lab also can do unknown substances so when we do clandestine laboratories that manufacture methamphetamine. When they come up with something that we’ve never seen before, this laboratory would be at least able to identify the chemicals and then try and figure out what they are doing with these chemicals to get high," said Department of Public Safety Deputy Director Keith Kamita.

The lab also handles analysis for the Kauai Police Department.

The only other similarly accredited lab in the state is run by the Navy.
