Transit-oriented development expert speaks on Oahu

Peter Calthorpe gave a presentation and answered questions at the Mission Memorial Auditorium Tuesday afternoon. He says not building rail now would cost the city more than its budgeted $5.3 billion in the long-run by putting it off.

“You have both global well-being and local well-being in your hands with this decision,” said Calthorpe. “And I think it should be an easy decision.”

Rail opponents say
honolulu cannot afford the system and the money being raised would better be used elsewhere like on sewer system upgrades.

Some say a bus rapid transit system would make more sense.

Calthorpe agreed to speak to Oahu residents en route to a commitment in China. The city gave him $1,000 honorarium for his time.
