HONOLULU (AP) – Tuition at Hawaii’s public university system will go up starting next year.
The University of Hawaii’s Board of Regents on Wednesday approved proposed tuition increases for campuses statewide.
Full-time students at the public university system’s flagship Manoa campus would see a tuition increase of 35 percent over the next five years. The university proposed an increase of $132 per semester for Manoa in the first year, $120 for UH Hilo and $60 at the community colleges.
UH West Oahu’s tuition would go up $228 per semester in the first year because the newer campus faces start-up costs.
University President M.R.C. Greenwood calls the increases "reasonable" and notes the university has sustained more than $86 million in operating budget cuts over the past two years.
