A UH manoa geologist returned from a recent expedition with a rare lava…and spectacular video.
Kenneth Rubin was witness to exploding rock and molten lava from a deep sea volcano in the South Pacific.
On the mission, scientists collected boninite, a rare-chemically distinct lava that accompanies the formation of the earth’s subduction zones.
They say until now, the only boninite studied has been from long dead volcanoes millions of years old.
