One of Las Vegas’ biggest pending projects has been taken off the table. Restaurateur and owner of the Golden Nugget casinos, Tilman Fertitta, has aborted his plan to build a $270 million casino on a six-acre parcel at the corner of Harmon Avenue and the Strip. While a slumping Las Vegas economy and Fertitta’s preoccupation with his appointment as the U.S. ambassador to Italy likely contributed to the decision, his status as the largest stockholder in Wynn Resorts was cited as the primary reason. A Fertitta spokesperson issued a statement saying that “building a competing high-end resort only a mile down the street would be a conflict of interest.” The vacant property has been turned into a parking lot and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
